Former BUSH Frontman: 'I Love The Hard Music But I'm A Sucker For Melody'

Launch Radio Networks reports: Former BUSH frontman Gavin Rossdale admits that his new group, INSTITUTE, doesn't sound too different from his previous band. But with INSTITUTE's first album, "Distort Yourself", out today (Tuesday, September 13),Rossdale told Launch there are subtle differences between the two bands. "The whole concept of INSTITUTE really was born and to make it this kind of stripped-down, quite muscular, quite cyclical rock record came, and trying to get this hybrid of quite a hard backing sound or a clean-hard, and then just try to sing over the top of it, but not in a, you know, kind of shouting, aggressive kind of way," he explained. "I love the hard music but I'm a sucker for melody."

Rossdale first began writing the songs that appear on "Distort Yourself" as a side project, but it became his full-time concern when BUSH went on hiatus in 2002.

"Distort Yourself" was produced by HELMET's Page Hamilton, a longtime influence on Rossdale. HELMET guitarist Chris Traynor is also in INSTITUTE and was briefly a member of BUSH, replacing founding member Nigel Pulsford in 2002.

INSTITUTE played a series of club dates during the summer but has so far announced only one new show, on October 23 in Dallas, Texas. More are expected to be announced soon.
